SYDNEY INSIGHTS #10 - SYDNEY TOWER

Sydney Tower is the tallest building in New South Wales.

Were it not for the Q1 building on the Gold Coast it would still be the tallest building in Australia.

Furthermore if it were not for the Sky Tower in Auckland it would be the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere.

Let it be said however that the observation deck on Sydney Tower is 50m higher than that of Auckland's Sky Tower.

It's been called many different titles over the years including Sydney Tower Eye, AMP Tower, Westfield's Tower, Centrepoint Tower and Centrepoint.

It stands at 309m high above the newly refurbished Westfield's Sydney but is 327m above sea level.

The tower was officially opened to the general public in August 1981 after construction began in 1975. Earlier the plans were unveiled in 1968 and the site office built in 1970.

The tower is one of the must do attractions in Sydney and can be accessed day and night. There are revolving restaurants inside the building as well as the observation decks. Skywalk is a newer addition where visitors can walk on a glass bottom platform 268m above the ground.

At a total cost of $36 million Sydney Tower can hold a maximum of 960 people who are whisked up in three high speed elevators in 40 seconds.

Take a look on a clear day into the city and surrounds or go up at night and see Sydney twinkle and sparkle in the fairy lights below.
